Gourd bowls, xukúrite, are traditionally made as votive offerings and taken on pilgrimages where there are deposited in sacred places to the female ancestors. The gourd bowl represents the female aspect of what is sacred, or the womb, fertility and the celestial abode. The different icons are designed to symbolize our welfare, using shells, seeds, beads, or threads.
