Women Embroidering Photograph ©Juan Negrín 1983
Embroidery
(xuiyá) is an art practiced by Wixaritari women who pass on their
family patterns from generation to generation. According to many, the brightly
colored symbols on their clothes enable them to be recognized by their ancestors
as they travel on pilgrimages or perform the yearly cycle of ceremonies.
In recent times some western patterns have been introduced and are also
used.
